Jalen Brunson scored 12 points and hit two early threes in the Knicks’ preseason opener, offering encouragement after offseason wrist surgery.

The New York Knicks left Philadelphia with plenty to improve, but Jalen Brunson’s preseason debut provided an encouraging moment amid a disappointing team performance.

In New York’s 120–97 loss to the 76ers, Brunson finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in 15 minutes. His two first-quarter three-pointers were particularly welcome following offseason surgery on his left wrist.

A brief exhibition appearance cannot settle questions about how a player will handle the demands of a full season. Still, Brunson gave Knicks fans something positive to take from a night defined by missed shots and uneven execution.

Brunson Finds His Range While the Knicks Struggle

New York endured a difficult shooting performance, converting just eight of its 41 three-point attempts. Against that backdrop, Brunson’s early perimeter production stood out.

He knocked down two threes in the opening quarter and scored eight points during that period, helping the Knicks stay close before Philadelphia created separation. His ability to contribute immediately was a useful first step as he returned to game action.

The significance was straightforward: Brunson was back on the floor, taking outside shots and producing in limited minutes. Those are observable positives, even though shooting results alone cannot establish the condition of his wrist.

His contribution also extended beyond scoring. Three assists and four rebounds added to a productive appearance, giving New York a familiar source of offensive direction during his time on the court.

For Mike Brown, that provided one stable element in a game built around evaluating numerous players and combinations.

Why Brunson’s Opening Minutes Matter More Than the Final Score

Preseason success is measured partly by how established players prepare for their regular responsibilities. For Brunson, the opener offered an opportunity to regain competitive rhythm without carrying a full workload.

His 15-minute appearance produced encouraging results, but the next step is consistency as the preseason progresses. Timing with teammates, decision-making against different coverages and sustained execution will provide a fuller picture than two early makes.

The team performance also reinforced how important Brunson remains to New York’s offense. When possessions became difficult, the Knicks struggled to generate enough easy scoring opportunities elsewhere.

That places additional importance on developing reliable support around him. Better secondary creation would help New York maintain offensive structure when its captain rests and reduce the need for him to solve every difficult possession.

The Philadelphia loss exposed work to do throughout the roster. Brunson’s efficient use of limited minutes offered a more encouraging starting point: the Knicks’ lead guard returned to action and immediately contributed, giving fans a reason to look beyond an unfavorable scoreboard.
