Knicks Rumors: John Konchar Could Fill a Key Roster Need

John Konchar is available after being waived by Minnesota, and the defending champion Knicks could view the veteran wing as an ideal addition.
The New York Knicks still have room to strengthen their championship roster, and veteran wing John Konchar has emerged as a potential free-agent option.
Konchar became available after a series of transactions involving the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz. Minnesota acquired Cody Williams and Konchar from Utah in exchange for Josh Green and cash, creating the necessary flexibility to complete the signing of Jonathan Kuminga.
The Timberwolves reportedly plan to retain Williams, the No. 10 overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft, but waived Konchar shortly after finalizing the deal.
That decision allows the veteran to sign with any interested team, and the defending NBA champions could be an intriguing destination.
Why John Konchar could interest the Knicks
The Knicks have two available roster spots and appear willing to remain patient as they evaluate the free-agent market.
New York does not necessarily need another high-volume scorer. Its championship core already includes several established offensive options, led by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. The front office could instead prioritize a versatile role player capable of defending, rebounding and moving the ball without demanding many shots.
Konchar fits that description.
The former Memphis Grizzlies wing has built his NBA career through energy, intelligent off-ball movement and a willingness to perform the less glamorous tasks. He can contribute without dominating possession, making him a potentially natural fit alongside New York’s stars.
A proven NBA role player for the second unit
Konchar is not a player who would dramatically transform the Knicks’ offense, but he could provide useful depth across several areas.
Throughout his career, he has earned minutes by competing defensively, attacking the glass and keeping possessions alive. His ability to connect different parts of an offense could also help New York’s second unit maintain its rhythm when Brunson or other starters are resting.
Konchar can operate as a complementary passer and is capable of knocking down open perimeter shots. Opponents cannot completely ignore him behind the three-point line, which would help preserve spacing around the Knicks’ primary creators.
His low-maintenance playing style would be particularly valuable for a team that already has a clearly established hierarchy.
New York must avoid championship complacency
After winning the NBA title, the Knicks could have chosen to bring back the same roster and rely entirely on the formula that carried them through the postseason.
However, championship teams rarely remain untouched. Rivals adjust, weaknesses become more visible and internal competition is necessary to prevent complacency.
Adding Konchar would not represent a major overhaul. It would instead give head coach Mike Brown another dependable rotation option capable of challenging the current reserves for minutes.
That competition could benefit the entire team during the long regular season.
Konchar’s arrival would also protect New York against injuries. A contender needs players who can step into the rotation without requiring major tactical changes, and his experience could make him a reliable emergency option.
Konchar could match the Knicks’ identity
The Knicks’ championship run was built on more than elite individual talent. Defensive commitment, physicality and unselfish basketball were also essential components of their success.
Those qualities have defined Konchar’s career.
He established himself as a useful reserve in Memphis by playing with consistent effort and embracing whatever responsibility was required. His versatility would allow the Knicks to use him in different lineup combinations, while his rebounding from the wing could create additional possessions.
New York already has several players known for their hustle and willingness to sacrifice personal statistics. Konchar would appear to complement that culture rather than disrupt it.
Would John Konchar have a role in New York?
Finding consistent minutes might be the biggest challenge.
The Knicks have one of the NBA’s deepest rosters, and Konchar would need to compete with multiple guards and wings for a place in the rotation. He would not arrive with any guarantee of regular playing time.
Nevertheless, the opportunity to join the defending champions could be attractive. Konchar would bring playoff experience, depth and tactical flexibility while giving New York another proven professional at the end of its roster.
The financial terms would also be important. After earning approximately $21 million over his NBA career, Konchar may have several options. If he is willing to accept a team-friendly contract, he could become an appealing low-risk addition for the Knicks.
Knicks should seriously consider Konchar
There is no confirmation that New York has opened formal negotiations with Konchar. For now, the connection remains a logical free-agency possibility rather than an advanced deal.
Still, the fit makes sense.
The Knicks have open roster spots, championship ambitions and a need to maintain competition throughout the rotation. Konchar offers experience, positional flexibility and the kind of team-first approach that could work well at Madison Square Garden.
He may not be the most glamorous name remaining in free agency, but championship teams often improve through smaller, intelligent moves. Signing John Konchar could give the Knicks another valuable “glue guy” as they prepare to defend their NBA title.
