Julius Randle refuses to call himself a champion, but his role in rebuilding the Knicks remains an important part of New York’s 2026 NBA title.

The New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA championship ended a 53-year wait and completed one of the most remarkable rebuilding stories in recent league history.

Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the rest of New York’s championship roster deservedly received the attention after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games. However, the Knicks’ return to the top began years before that memorable postseason run.

Julius Randle was one of the players who helped make it possible.

The former Knicks star was recently asked whether he considered himself a champion because of his contribution to the franchise’s transformation. Randle rejected the suggestion, choosing instead to praise the organization and everyone involved in its long journey.

His answer was humble, but it also reopened the debate over how Knicks fans should remember his time in New York.

Julius Randle Refuses to Claim Knicks Championship Credit

Randle made it clear that he does not consider himself part of the championship team.

He acknowledged the difficult years and the many players required to build a winning organization, but he stopped short of accepting any personal credit for the final result. Instead, the veteran forward expressed his admiration for what the Knicks accomplished.

Randle was not on the court when New York won the title, so his position is understandable. Championship recognition belongs first to the players and coaches who completed the journey.

However, refusing the champion label does not erase his importance.

Randle joined the Knicks in 2019, when the franchise was still searching for stability, leadership and a new identity. His emergence as an All-Star and All-NBA player gave New York its first legitimate centerpiece in years.

He helped the Knicks return to the playoffs, restored credibility to the organization and played a major role in changing the expectations surrounding the team.

Randle Helped Create the Foundation for New York’s Success

Before Brunson became the face of the franchise, Randle carried much of the offensive responsibility in New York.

His tenure included impressive individual performances, important playoff appearances and difficult moments. He faced criticism, injuries and intense pressure from one of the NBA’s most demanding markets.

Despite those challenges, the Knicks were in a much stronger position when Randle left than when he arrived.

The franchise had developed a competitive culture, established itself as a regular playoff team and become an attractive destination for high-level players. Brunson’s arrival elevated the project, while subsequent moves pushed New York closer to championship contention.

Randle was eventually traded to Minnesota in the blockbuster deal that brought Towns to the Knicks. That move became another decisive step toward the title, with Towns playing a crucial role during the 2026 championship run.

It would therefore be inaccurate to call Randle a Knicks champion. But it would be equally unfair to remove him from the broader story of how the franchise reached that point.

Jalen Brunson Completed the Journey Randle Helped Start

Brunson ultimately became the leader capable of taking New York all the way.

The Knicks guard earned Finals MVP honors after scoring 45 points in the championship-clinching Game 5 against San Antonio. His postseason performance confirmed his status as the defining star of this era of Knicks basketball.

Randle’s role was different.

He represented the beginning of the turnaround—the player who helped New York believe it could become relevant again. Brunson became the superstar who converted that progress into a championship.

Both chapters matter, even if only one ended with a trophy.

That distinction helps explain why Randle’s response resonated with Knicks supporters. He did not attempt to make the championship about himself or suggest that he deserved recognition belonging to the current roster.

He simply respected the achievement while recognizing the difficult process that came before it.

Julius Randle Now Wants to Build Something Special in Brooklyn

Randle’s attention has shifted to his new challenge with the Brooklyn Nets.

After helping the Knicks move from rebuilding team to playoff contender, he now hopes to participate in a similar transformation across New York City. Brooklyn remains far from championship contention, but Randle understands how quickly expectations can change when a franchise establishes the right culture.

His experience, physical playmaking and leadership could be valuable for a young Nets roster attempting to build a sustainable future.

Creating another contender will require patience. The Knicks needed several seasons, multiple roster changes and the arrival of a true franchise player before completing their journey.

Randle witnessed that process firsthand.

He may never be officially recognized as a member of the Knicks’ championship team, but his contribution remains an important part of the franchise’s history. New York’s title was the final product of years of progress, and Julius Randle helped take some of the most difficult first steps.
